Been tracking Carlos's serve stats through the Turin group stage and there's a glaring weakness emerging. His second serve points won percentage has dropped from 67% (season average) down to just 34% across his first two ATP Finals matches.
Against Casper on Monday, he won only 8 of 23 second serve points. Tuesday's match with Zverev was even worse - 11 of 31. That's a massive 33-point drop from his usual conversion rate.
The Medvedev Factor
Daniil's return positioning has been surgical this week. He's standing 2.5 metres further back than usual on second serves, giving himself extra time to read the spin and direction. His second serve return winner percentage is up 23% compared to his Shanghai Masters showing.
At +145 for Thursday's match, there's clear value here. Alcaraz's second serve has become a liability under the indoor conditions, and Medvedev's return game is perfectly suited to exploit it.
